Female Lib. Questioned

Get carter is a film commentating on the transition from the swinging sixties to the more bleak 1970s. In the sixties there was a movement of female liberation over Britain that changed the ideologies of women in some societies whereby women no longer had to be owned by men. However in most cases this view of how women can be independent and in control of their lives is still seen as being strange and frowned upon by the majority of the population.

A character in ‘Get Carter’ that attempts to adopt this new way of thinking is Edna. She is a woman who has started her own business, and lives without a man. She is able to male her own decisions and doesn’t need to abide to the traditional gender roles - that is until Jack enters her house. As soon as he enters her house she starts serving him as if he owns her, when in fact he is paying her in order to stay in her B&B. This questions weather female liberation actually taken place as she is still being controlled even within her own home. This is exemplified when carter orders her to make a cup of tea, and she obliges without any question or complaint.

Another time when we see female liberation being questioned is when Carter says "I know you have purple underwear.". What he is really doing is blackmailing her into doing what he wants her to do in this case, sex. The reason this is so incriminating for her is because if Jack tells anyone he knows what colour her underwear is they will think that she has been sleeping around out of wedlock. Despite the fact that women are supposed to be liberated from from having to abide to these rules the community in which the film is set still holds entirely traditional ideologies that would think Edna scum if they knew what she was doing. An example of a character whom holds strongly to the traditional ideologies is Edna's next door neighbour -  she is an older woman who frowns upon Edna and sees her as an outsider in her community.

Another time in the film when women's liberation is questioned is the use of the sex film this is an example of where men have - more than likely - forced women into partaking in a sex film. This film is made for men by men and is a clear representation of how man can still have control over women and their bodies and female liberation has not taken place.
