The
female characters are all victims owned and used by men who see them as sex
objects and little more.
AN example of a female character that is
victimised is Anna. In the first scene you see her she is surrounded by men and
is being caressed on the leg. The men in the scene are flicking through porn,
this objectifies women but also objectifies her because she has been in that
position before. Anna’s body language is showing that she is very distressed
and doesn’t want to be there. The camera victimises her by selectively panning
upwards objectifying her as just an object for the audience who are looking
through the Male Gaze (Visual Pleasure and the Narrative of Cinema Theory). In
the scene the mise-en-scene has pictures of naked women around the room, this
enforces how women are being objectified. In the whole of the scene she has no
dialogue this shows that she is just she is just an object and has no
importance to the men, the only importance she has is for sex.
In a later scene where you see Anna again Carter
is manipulating her for his pleasure and the audiences. The use of Britt Ekland
is not for her acing skills it is down to her being the sexiest woman in the
world during that era. This adds nothing to film, she is solely cast for the
pleasure of the heterosexual males in the audience as this use of women as sex
objects was fostered during this time. In the scene Carter forces Anna to do
sexual acts on herself even though she says no. This shows how Anna is owned by
Carter and is used by him as a simple sex object. The camera is positioned
quite intimately this enforces Anna as a sex object.
