How is scotties masculinity constructed?

During the opening sequence we see Scottie 'castrated' when he fails to capture the villain. He instead falls of the roof and is left hanging whilst his partner tries to save him but dies in his attempt, this immediately positions scotty as the damsel in distress and shows that he has not only failed to be the protagonist but he has failed to be a hero. The next scene opens with a long shot of scotty playing with his cain as midge is sat working. This scene is a visual signifier of his weakness because he is physically injured, this scene aesthetically resembles a mother hard at work whilst her child plays. It is later established that midge and scotty where once engaged however midge left him after three weeks, the fleeting glance she gives him as he reminisces suggests that her reason for leaving was because he was too immature because it only lasted three weeks. This shows that Scotty wasn't mature enough, is emasculates him because he was rejected by a women not the other way round.
