Vertigo

How is Scotties masculinity constructed?

Scottie is presented in a feminine light throughout the scene and is viewed to have castration anxiety. In an earlier scene we see Scottie failing to fulfil his duty as a police officer and as a protagonist which he continues to do. Due to the current situation he is in he has developed a mental trauma - vertigo - due to his fear of heights reducing him to a feminised character.

In the opening scene it is clear for the audience that Scottie feels embarrassed by the fact he must wear a corset because of his injures - he asks Midge wether or not wearing a corset is 'normal' showing his insecurities whilst looking for acceptance from Midge. He does the same thing when he is asking Midge about a bra that she has designed - this makes Scottie look boyish and almost inexperienced with women due to he fact he has to ask a motherly figure in his life to explain how a bra works. Midge patronises Scottie in a way as she begins to ask him about his future as he isn't employed but she is. Scottie says that him and Midge were engaged for 3 weeks when they were younger however Midge called of the engagement again showing she is in control swell as showing that Scottie cannot maintain a committed and intimate relationship.
