Within 'Get Carter' and 'Bullet Boy' we see many messages and values are portrayed to us in different ways through different characters. This shows the difference in society and attitude towards certain groups in society during different times over the past 45 years.
In the opening scene of 'Get Carter' we see a message about women is portrayed to us almost instantaneously, this is the message that to older traditional men still viewed women as lesser than men and serve men for sexual pleasure. We see this during the opening scene were in which the Fletcher brothers are sat together looking at pornographic images in a room with a woman, this is a clear sign of disrespect to the woman. This was just after the Liberation of women in the 1960s so this film also holds the view that the 'swinging sixties' was a myth and women were not granted liberation from the males in society during this time, 'Get Carter' shows the fallout of this. One scene that portrays this perfectly is the scene in which Carter bosses Edna about in her own house/business. During this scene we see Carter enforce his dominance over Edna inside her own home, this portrays the message that men still viewed women as lesser than them as we already know from an earlier introduction Edna is an independent, strong, business woman. Yet in this scene her independence and power is taken away by Carter purely because he believes he holds the power because he is the male in the house. This scene also links into the message that men viewed women as very passive. This is shown in this scene when Carter tells Edna to go and make him a cup of tea and she just follows his command, also when she threatens to phone the police and Carter simply tells her that she wont, this shows that Carter just expects Edna to obey his command because he is a man.
This is the complete opposite in 'Bullet Boy' as women in the film are represented as strong and independent and are treated this way by the male characters. This is portrayed in the scene were Shea breaks up with Ricky and tells him to leave, she makes her own choice to pick her life over his, Ricky isn't happy but he respects her wishes and leaves. Another scene that portrays this is the scene in which Ricky goes to probation......................................This emphasises the message in 'Bullet Boy' that women are in control, rational, independent, smart and strong, this is the polar opposite of how women are represented in 'Get Carter'.
