The theme of environment that the young men are in influence them is shown when Ricky picks Wisdom up from jail. Ricky, who doesn't want to re-enter the criminal world however is forced to is introduced to the world. Wisdom gives Ricky the drugs he smokes and then literally delivers him in to the centre of the criminal environment. Ricky is then also ridiculed for wanting to go into the real world and get a job by Wisdom, this then reenforcing the the theme of crime is in a cycle. He is presented with the opportunity to re-enter the crime world and then reminded that he owes Wisdom. He may have been given an offer, however there is only one outcome to the offer, basically forcing him back into the life of crime, showing a ideology that once entered the crime world, there is no way to get out of it. Once you're in, you're in. The cause of all this is Wisdom reminding Ricky he owes him when he shoots Godfrey's dog.
Minor situations n the film have a huge impact on the future of the film. They seem insignificant in the film now, however they have major repercussions of the narrative later in the film. If Ricky hadn't picked up Wisdom, a series of things would not have happened: Godfrey's car crash and his dog being shot, Curtis finding a gun which then led to the shooting of Rio, Wisdom's attempts to kill Godfrey and the fatality that is Ricky's death.
The messages of crime being taught is shown through the younger character of Curtis. It is shown when Curtis emulates drugs from his older brother. The effect of the crime being taught is causing Rio to be shot by Curtis. The structure of Curtis' narrative reflects many major themes such as the cause and effect of Bullet Boy enhancing the realism of the film which then highlights the social issues the film raises. The causes of most events lead to the death of Ricky and this is out of his control, death is inevitable, however it should come early. Ricky cannot control his own fate/destiny due to him being tied to Wisdom through his perceived debt.
