Research
The Little Mermaid
Stereotypical as Ariel is spending ages
getting ready and has “been in there all morning.” This is showing how Ariel
cares a lot about her looks and this has a negative influence on younger girls
who watch this and this is very stereotypical that women spend a long time
getting ready to look attractive. This suggests that all girls need to do is
look attractive
Ursula (the villain) is bigger, not as
skinny and is of a darker complexion as for Ariel being very thin, white with
long hair.
Cinderella
Stereotypical as Cinderella is washing the
floors and does not seem to care much about the fact she is doing it as she is
singing along as if she enjoys cleaning the floors. Very stereotypical – implying women enjoy doing domestic work and
should expect themselves to be the one who does it.
Snow White
Stereotypical as she is the damsel in
distress when she is walking through the forest and is scared and trying to run
away. Implying that women need to be saved by a prince (man) and need a man to
feel safe. Implying that women are weaker and less fearless than men.
Research
-
Cinderella
“Leave the sewing to the
women”
This shows the ideology
that women are domestic and do stereotypical jobs such as cleaning, washing
etc. No mention to men doing domestic tasks. The female mouse says this to the
male mouse when the male offers to do Cinderella a favor (sewing)
-
Snow White
When in the dwarves house
Snow White she says, “You think their mother would clean!” Even though Snow
White is a girl herself, Disney have made her sexist towards her own gender as
this is teaching girls they should be clean and domestic and according to her
women should stay at home.
-
The Little Mermaid
Ursula – “What I want from
you is your voice.” This is teaching young girls to just be pretty and silent
and that what they have to say does not matter, as long as they look nice. By
this, Ursula is saying that girls do not need intelligence and that it is not
important for them and that a pretty face is all that matters. Ariel gives up
her voice and by accepting Ursula’s deal, it is teaching little girls that they
must change for men – even if they have to give something up. This leads to
Ariel choosing to give up being a mermaid and chooses to be a human and leave
her family to be with her “true love.” This shows how everything about a girl
is seen as superficial.
-
Beauty and the Beast
In this film, Disney are
romanticizing domestic abuse towards women and by Belle staying with the beast,
it is showing younger people that it is ok to be in an abusive relationship.
This once again is showing that men are the dominant ones in relationships and
that women should accept that. This teachers younger girls that their identity
does not matter as Belle is dominated by the beast.

Film and their effects on society
http://www.lemiffe.com/films-and-their-effect-on-society/
This is a blog about the effects film has on society and that we are not ready to create our own art forms because the effect on society is too dangerous.
It makes many good points and has a few good facts. For example...
“By the time the average U.S. child starts elementary school he or she will have seen 8,000 murders and 100,00 acts of violence on TV.” - New Scientist, 2007
