Cinematography - Lesson 3

Directors use the 'Frame' or screen to tell a story. Deciding on what goes in to that frame can have a dramatic impact on how the audience respond to a scene.

For example:

The King's Speech

The film portrays King George and his struggles with speaking in public. Throughout the film tge director uses the frame to reinforce this idea and imply a sense of paranoia.

In this scene the King is speaking at Wembley Stadium:

Notice how the background is filled with spectators staring at the king - highlighting his discomfort

This alternative framing does not include the audience and as a result the sense of being watched is lessened.
