The Mortal Instruments - Film Review - Michael O'Neill

Film Review:
The Mortal Instruments – City of Bones
By Michael O’Neill

What’s it about? - The Mortal Instruments – City of Bones is based on the New York Times best seller and follows the life of Clarrisa (Clary) Fray a seemingly normal teenage girl. However she discovers that the world she has lived in has been a lie when she meets the mysterious stranger Jace Wayland. Jace takes Clary into an amazing yet dangerous world full of Demons and Warlocks!

Who’s in it? – Lily Collins as Clary Fray
Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace Wayland
Robert Sheenan as Simon Lewis
Kevin Zegers as Alec Lightwood
Lena Headey as Jocelyn Fray
Aidan Turner as Luke Garroway
Jemima West as Isabelle Lightwood
Godfrey Gao as Magnus Bane
Jared Harris as Hodge Starkweather
Johnathan Rhys Meyers as Valentine Morgenstern

My Opinion – The film itself is a visual masterpiece, in particular the institute as what firsts looks like a run-down abandoned church transforms into a golden palace. The special effects were fantastic as the creators we’re cleverly able to transform a humble dog into a hideous beast!

Criticism – Although I thoroughly enjoyed the film I must point out that it didn’t do the book justice! By changing the entire ending I feel that they single handily ruined what Cassandra Clare created! I also worry what they plan to do with the next film as they used so much material from the second book in this one that there’s barely nothing left! Jace’s one liners started off entertaining but eventually got dull and irrelevant to the story line.

Rating – I rate this film 3/5 Runes!

  1. You have followed the guide to an OK standard but next time try not to use sub headings and write the review as one continuos piece. You do level good criticism at the film but you must expand upon your points and provide much deeper insight in to the film's pros and cons. You must meet the stated word limit!
