How important are 'Stars' to Audiences and Producers?

The word 'stars' in terms of celebrity is a common word used by many to describe a person of celebrity who stands out amongst the crowd. this can be in an form of the entertainment industry from singers to actors to productions. The 'star' of a film is not necassarily the main actor or even supporting actor, its simply someone who stands out amongst the rest of the cast, they can then be classed as the 'star'.

The star I have chosen to focus on is Leanardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio has been in the public eye for over 20 years since his first film debut in 1993 as a child actor. ever since then he has starred in many major movies, mostly in his later life ranging from Titanic to portraying the famous Jay Gatsby and so on. he has built up a huge fanbase due to his ability to be incredibly versaitaille in the roles that he plays and refuses to be typecast as a traditional hollywood heartthrob.

For producers to have Leonardo DiCaprio in a movie that they produce is almost guarenteed success due to the size of his fanbase. they know that he is not only able to create an amazing experience for the audiences of this film, but that you can push him to his limit to get the best acting out of him because of his passion for acting. Because of the almost guarenteed income of a film with a mojor hollywood star in it, producers are able to take many expensive risks that they may not ordinarily take because of the fact that even if the film isnt classified a 'success', there is still a greater chance that they will make back their money as people will most likely still see a film just to watch DiCaprio act.
However their are some downsides to having huge stars in your film. one of these being that it highers the expectations enourmously for the success of the film. when people have very high expectations, its almost impossible to meet them, therefore mostly leaving audiences quite dissapointed.

For audiences, having a star in the film is good because, as previously mentioned, stars tend to have big fanbases, therefore all members of that fanbase will see that film just for that particular actor which will make it a success in their eyes no matter the outcome. It also highers the expectations for the audience because they will not want to be dissapointed by their favorite actor so it increses their willingness to go see it.
