What role do the media play in La Haine?
We are aware of the medias role all over the world as we are an audience to it everyday. And yet we are continuously manipulated by what we see. This factor plays a massive role in how the director wants to portray the media. In that Kassovitz reinforces the fact that they are creating a point of view, which is essentially the only one the public will see. We see this point reinforced through the shot of the cameras recordings, in which we see what looks like very violent and dangerous citizens, this shows in a short few seconds the only point of view the media are likely to show, as a result we as an audience grasp what the director is trying to show us. In that the media are simply demonising the citizens and are manipulating the rest of society.
We notice a connotation of a Zoo like representation of the playground. For example, the kid swinging from the climbing frame seemingly representing a monkey in a animal enclosure. Further when the jeep drives past, we see another connotation suggesting that they are a safari looking for worthy news to film. We also notice the shot of the media seemingly higher up behind a cage in a low angle shot, this straight away as an audience makes them seem higher up therefore more dominant and overpowering in this situation, however the revere shot shows the trio in a low angle shot also. This reinforces the idea that they may be lower in the playground, but they are in their comfortable environment (Projects) therefore are too very dominant, overall showing that they (the trio) are not intimidated or threatened by the media. Also the point of the media being further up and behind the fence, suggests the connotation that they are visiting a Zoo and almost instating a reaction to the ‘animals’.
