Get Carter portrays a society in which women are not liberated, except in superficial ways

Women in Get Carter are shown to be liberated, only in superficial ways.
An example of a woman within the film who falls under this is Doreen. Although Doreen is seen to be getting by without any men in her life, when Carter arrives he behind to force her to rely upon him. We seethes during the scene outside the cafe, Carter makes Doreen come out t speak to him and then questions her about where she'll live if she doesn't come with him, at the end of the scene he gives her money and tells her to get her hair cut.
This shows that although Doreen is independent in her everyday life when a man tells her t do something she still follows the instructions given to her.

Edna is also an example of this, she is a landlady of her own business and doesn't have a husband or any other man helping her. However when Carter shows up, she falls back to a submissive role, doing as he asks and letting him take control in her own home.
