Just like Genre, narrative is itself a method story telling. The cyclical nature of City of God's narrative is very telling of the nature of crime in the slums of Rio. Lil Ze's life is shown through a cycle -

The director uses the narrative structure of the film to highglight the cyclical nature of violence in the slums. Children are born in to a violence atmosphere and, as they are deprived education and positive role model, they tend to replicate the behaviour seen.
