History of Sci-Fi

We may tend to think of the Science Fiction(Sci-Fi) genre as a contemporary development in cinema. It's focus on advanced technology, dystopian futures and 'What if...' scenarios appear to be concepts of a modern, technologically advanced society.

However Science Fiction has been around since the early nineteenth century in novels such as 'Frankenstien' by Mary Shelly.

Dr. Frankenstien uses modern scientific techniques to build a human being and create life. His quest to conquer nature and his use of advanced technology is reflective of the fears held by many during the industrial revolution.

During the revolution new technologies quickly developed and were used for many tasks leading to increased pollution and overcrowding of the cities.

Similar to James Cameron over 150 years later, Shelly saw rapid growth of technology and mans disregard for the consequences of its use and asked the question:

"What if we loose control of our creations?"

Frankenstein's monster seeks revenge on his creator, giving a clear insight in to Shelly's thought on the technological advancements taking place around her.
