Stanley Kubrick is seen by many as one of (if not the) Greatest Directors of all time. In their obituary to him, the New York Times describes him as:
"One of the few American directors who had the prestige to make big-budget movies while working outside the Hollywood mainstream, Mr. Kubrick directed coldly brilliant films that explored humanity's baser instincts with great visual flair and often savage wit. Although those films won eight Academy Awards, none were for best director"
During our FM4 - Spectatorship and Emotional Responses we will study the ways in which a film can prompt specific response or even manipulate our points of view through both 'Textual' & 'Extra-Textual' information.
As film students we are able to analyse the film and read the 'language of cinema' to gain an understanding of how filmmakers manipulate our responses. However, the extra textual information we bring to the film is unique to you as an individual.
Experiences that are unique to your life may have a dramatic impact on how you respond to certain themes, actions or characters.
If we are too truly understand the films of Stanley Kubrick (or as far as it is possible!) we must have an awareness of the man himself.
This documentary covers Kurbick's entire career and provides fascinating and detailed in sight in to not only him as a man, but his working process and views of the world.
