How women are represented

How are women represented in the films you have studied for this topic? In the film Get Carter women are represented as objects towards men. During the scene when Glenda is attempting to seduce Carter while Kinnear is gambling with people Kinnear is ordering her to do whatever he says without hesitation this shows that the women are represented as the housewife and the men are the breadwinners and the women must listen to the men because they are he ones bringing the money into the household. Glenda is used to please men and Kinnear uses her seduce Carter this shows that Kinnear has control over Glenda and what he says she must do. In 1963 the pill came out this gave women more freedom and control over their sex lives this would have changed everything, after the pill came out more women were entering the work place and when Carters niece comes into the room with Carters dead brother she says that she works in Woolworths which would be unusual for women. Women in the 1960’s were shown as erotic objects for characters in the film, The way the women characters are dressed Glenda is dressed in white and has her breasts showing this is known as ‘the male gaze’ The male gaze is when women are shown how the men want to see them in revealing clothing and to seduce Carter because this is what people wanted to see they made all the women out to be porn stars and this is often fetishised by the male audiences, The 1970’s was a carry over of the 1960’s that had hardly changed they still seen women as objects and men could say whatever he wanted because they were the more dominant sex when Edna comes into the hall and threatens Carter to phone the police Carter tells Edna what she is going to do and is giving her a reward for doing as he says this shows that men were more in control rather then the women. Anna receives a phone call of Carter and her first shot that the audience see is her taking her clothes off this suggests that this is what the male audience would have imagined and wanted to see, Anna is framed in a way that someone is watching her and this comes across as a voyeuristic experience for the audience this is how they wanted to see women they are represented as objects that can be told to do anything, Carter instructs Anna to pleasure herself even though they are a distance away but his voice can order her to do what he wants. Women are represented as objects that men can order about and they make it look like it is the only purpose they have is to sleep with Carter and to serve his orders as well as Kinnear orders Glenda to do what he says and help Carter. Carters niece is shown in a pornographic film that Carter gets hold of this shown how the male audience want to see the women in this fetish way. Women are shown as erotic objects that men control in this film they have no purpose other then lead them to someone else in the film like when Carter watches the film of his niece Glenda leads him to his next suspect then she dies after the car is pushed into the water.
