American films reflects
times and places in which they were made
In the American films we have studies WOTW and IOTBS one
clear thing stood out in my mind then men are the most active people in these
films by far they are stronger faster and have the authority over everyone
else. There is only one part I remember a woman being strong and that was in
WOTW that is the scene at the start where Rachael is dropping the children of
at Ray’s house and in this scene yes she is a strong character but she is being
strong about things that do not even matter like the dishes and where the
children sleep. By the time we are 20 minutes into this film none of that
matters anymore it is all about running away for the Aliens so yes she is
strong but in such a senile way. I believe this does not represent the time we
live in and this is because a lot more women nowadays have equal jobs to men
have equal pay and actually have equal control so I believe the lack of control
from women in this film is actually unrealistic.
Now in IOTBS I really do believe that this movie is representative
of the time they lived in and this is because in the 50’s women had no rights
what so ever they were undermined by every man they knew and saw they never had
any equal pay they earned a lot less than a man. But one main thing is that Women
where never given an position of authority in the world so they had no control
and the men where left do take the authority and get rich while the women had
to be controlled by the men and cook the men meals clean the houses and
workplace and basically do very scrummy job that a man did not want.
Throughout IOTBS Becky was always being saved by Dr Miles if a body snatcher appeared he would save Becky if he could and by the end Becky was tired and gave up trying to runaway whereas Miles still wanted to keep going to live. The proof that Women where undermined in the 50’s is that by the end of the film Miles was not caught by the body snatchers but Becky was. This shows that in the 50’s women were not given respect and that they were apparently weaker than the m
