The open scene of La Haine Mathieu Kassovitz creates a realistic framework. We are placed in this time and place by using archive footage of riots, the footage is very real and makes the spectator align with the people of the projects, one of the rioters says "You have guns, we have stones" which encourages us to align with the underdogs of the projects. We learn that someone called Abdel is in a critical condition due to the police, which is an ongoing problem in France as lots of immigrants are tortured and 300 have been killed, as they are seen as non-French, and are therefore pushed away in to the projects. We are then introduced to Said, Said is a young Algerian man who is friends with Abdel, the first shot of him is a close up so we are instantly encouraged to align with him, the hate stems from the Setif massacre, which was a battle between the French and the Algerians.
The start of City of God starts with knifes being sharpened, this sets the tone for a violent film....
