How far should the films you have studied for this topic be
seen in relation to their particular time and place?
The opening of La Haine shows numerous key features, which
happened in the time and place it was set. During the opening sequence we see
selection of riot videos, which help show the thoughts of the police from the
Non-French perspective, We only see the one view of the police which is that
they are corrupt and that they have a higher authority then everyone else this
is shown by the first scene when the man shouts to the police ‘Look you have
guns and we have rocks’ this states that the police are over powering, Straight
away the police are seen as the Antagonist because they are seen as being
against the immigrants.
Abdel was attacked by a police officer and the police
officer is only suspended this shows how the police is corrupt. The footage
during the opening sequence sets a documentary feel to the film this is because
the film is based on real life. All the footage is in black and white this
could symbolise the past, the footage was took between 82-93 this shows that
the riots are an on going problem in France.
After the footage has been shown a news report comes up
stating that immigrant Abdel was attacked by the police and is left in hospital
critical, this can relate to the Makoni Embowle Death, this was just 1 of 300
death which happened in France due to the hand of the police which shows the
police are corrupt and that they are not protecting all the citizens of France.
During the opening scene of City of God a knife is being
sharpened this could indicate that the film is going to be violent, We first
see Chickens being killed and cooked to then see one escape The chicken can be
seen to symbolise all the citizens of Rio and the Favelas and that once you are
in the favelas you aren’t able to get back out of there, Lil Ze the main
Character instructs that people chase the chicken and everyone obeys his order
this shows that he has this higher level of importance and authority.
When the group starts to chase the chicken hey all have guns
and start shooting and there is no police or citizens running or looking scared
this is to show that this is a usual situation in Rio and there is nothing new
in people running around with guns, This shows the Favelas are a very dangerous
place and that there are children running around with guns.
There is no police in the Favela there is no authority with
the police, the authority lies wit the drug lords, Whilst watching a documentary
a lady commented on the drug lords.
