Full metal jacket task.

Hartmann is constructed as a hard to please drill sergeant who wouldn't take no for an answer.  In this opening scene we see a tracking shot that follows Hartmann around the platoon as he explains the rules and also explains how they are "all equally worthless" showing his beliefs of a group mentality, he goes onto insult many of the platoon. He explains that "the more you hate me, the more you will learn" showing that he believes in a hard way of teaching, that a more aggressive approach will bring the most out of the platoon. In this opening scene Joker lives up to his name as he tells a John Wayne joke as Hartmann is walking around and reacts to this aggressively and soon puts Joker in his place as Hartmann punches him in the stomach before telling him that he will teach him the ways in a POV shot. Joker then explains that he is there to kill showing his aggressive ways and from the audiences perspective this may sound like a negative trait as we are taught not to kill or harm others. Pyle in this opening scene is constructed as a very dim and slow character as when we first see him pulling a stupid grin on his face almost as if his brain wasn't working. This is followed up by him not being able to stop smiling when Hartmann tells him to do so showing his non serious approach to this and his child like state of mind. Hartmann soon puts him in his place by choking him and he soon realises that he is in the wrong place and is not exactly suited for this.
