The Godfather (Michael kills Sollozzo)

The sequence starts with Michael and Sollozzo sitting at the dinner table. diegetic sound is instantly introduced as the sound of the cutlery clinking and the bottle of wine opening is heard very quickly. The sound of though is exaggerated and both sounds are made to sound a lot louder than what they actually are. this adds tension to the scene as neither character is talking within this point so the awkwardness is truly shown through making every other sound ridiculously loud. At one point they both start taking in Italian which is a technique used by the director that could of possibly been used to tried and hide key information from us as the audience as it adds more suspense to the scene and makes us want to know more.

When Michael goes to the toilet the sound of the train is heard and is used very loudly. the train sound is big factor that helped Michael decide to kill Sollozzo as when he is about to kill him the train sound gets louder and louder until Michael eventually pulls the trigger. This sound is non diegetic at this point because its all in Michael's head an no one else can hear it. The train sound is very significant as when Sollozzo is talking the sound of the train slowly drowns it out so by changing the sound like this we as the audience know Michael has already made his decision that he's going to kill Sollozzo.

Just before Michael kills Sollozzo the sound of the buzzer on the door is heard. this is a diegetic soul as the characters would of been able to hear it. the buzzer in many ways could be saw as a symbol for Michael to kill Sollozzo. The opening of the bottle of wine possibly foreshadows the gunshot as the wine is red just like blood and when the bottle is opened a pop can be heard like the sound of a gunshot.

Following the shooting of Sollozzo music starts that is non diegetic, very dramatic and the type that can sometimes be heard in horror movies. in my opinion this creates tension as it shows that Michael has the ability to kill people after all. It also symbolises how much of a big thing this is as this guy is the man who shot Michael's father so the director tries to position us the audience in Michael's shoes therefore this music could be the type of sound that's going through Michael's head.
